Our Treatments

Structure Governs Function

Treatment techniques used at Thomson Therapy are aimed at treating the cause in order to remove / reduce presenting symptoms.

These clinically based treatment techniques have evolved during the last 21 years based on:

  • Clinical outcome measures
  • Evidence of efficacy

The Techniques - How do they work?

Both Paul Chaffour's 'Mechanical Link' and Jean-Pierre Barral's work and research utilise the fascial system to achieve change.

Fascia is a web like structure made of connective tissue that surrounds muscles, blood vessels and nerves, binding some structures together, while permitting others to slide smoothly over each other.

By softening the fascial system, Mechanical Link is used to assess and treat:

  • Bones and joints via joint mechanics
  • Blood supply via the pulse points
  • Organs contained within the rib cage and abdomen (visceral system)

Description of Techniques:

Muscle Energy Techniques (MET's)

Used to assess and change joint position, restrictions and biomechanics.

Recoil Therapy

Recoil, a type of manual therapy used to clear any restrictions in joint, muscle, tendon, nerve etc.

Skeletal asymmetry via the bones and joints impacts on:

  • Joint position and biomechanics
  • Skeletal position and alignment
  • Myofascial position / tension
  • Joint capsule and ligaments
  • Tendon tension and tracking
  • Nerve tension and tracking (central & peripheral)
  • Circulatory and lymphatic systems

Note the compensatory asymmetry & adaptive rotoscoliosis (rotation and twist at the spine):

TRAUMA: either major or cumulative minor traumas

Major Trauma Minor Trauma
  • Moderate / high velocity vehicle accidents
  • Post fractures anywhere in the body
  • Falls on buttocks / coccyx
  • Falls on stairs / off ladders etc.
  • Sports injuries (contact and non contact): rugby,

      volleyball, golf, gymnastics etc.

  • Head injuries
  • Ankle injuries
  • Fall onto outstretched hand
  • Resisted push / pull injuries i.e. dragged by dog
  • Childbirth (mother and baby) but can also be major
  • Low velocity shunts i.e. vehicle accidents, unexpected push

      from behind

  • Winding injuries

Signs and symtoms of pelvic girdle, low back pain, hip & groin dysfunction:

  • Reduced and / or painful back range of movement
  • Reduced hip range of movement + / - pain or stiffness i.e. dressing - socks, trousers etc.
  • Balance: single leg standing

Common patient complaints include difficulty and / or pain in activities of daily living such as: sit to stand, turning in bed, getting in / out of bed and cars, standing still, walking on an incline, prolonged sitting.

Other indicators: rocking / waddling gait, feet rotated outwards and preference to weight bear through one side.

Conditions treated:

  • Low back pain
  • Pelvic / groin pain
  • Hip pain / bursitis
  • Knee pain / replacements
  • Ankle / foot injuries
  • Disc prolapse / discectomy
  • Sciatica / scoiliosis
  • Arthritis - all joints
  • Polymyalgia
  • Post fracture mobilisation
  • Growing pains
  • Neck pain / headaches
  • Dizziness - vertigo
  • Thoracic / rib pain
  • Shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand pain
  • Shoudler replacements
  • TMJ problems
  • Referred arm pain
  • Women's health / S.P.D. / incontinence
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Poor balance

Which other patient groups can benefit from treatment?

Babies:

  • Unsettled / irritable infants
  • Torticollis - twisted neck
  • Colic and feeding problems
  • Erbs Palsy

Children / Teenagers:

  • Falls at play / sport
  • Growing pains
  • Asthma / chest problems
  • Sleep and attention deficit

Toddler's / Pre-School

  • Poor balance
  • Fidgity children
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Awkward runners
